What Is Analytical Hypnotherapy?

Unlike clinical hypnotherapy in which the therapeutic emphasis is on the use of post-hypnotic suggestions, Analytical Hypnotherapy - or hypnoanalysis as it is sometimes referred - involves an exploration of the unconscious issues that are driving your symptoms.

It is an analytical form of Hypnotherapy which deals with the cause of anxiety and emotional problems rather than simply treating the symptom.
A Little More

More often than not when a client come to see me with phobias, stutters, nervous twitches, depressive mood, anxiety, panic attacks, shyness, sexual problems and the like, I think it is a fair assumption that they think that somehow I am going to put them into hypnosis and tell them that they no longer stutter, or whatever. They assume that suggesting away the symptom is all it takes. However, we should be asking the question: Why? Why has that person developed that problem in the first place?

Hypnoanalysis is an approach using conscious questioning and hypnosis that goes beyond the symptoms of a problem and works on the basis of cause and effect and looks as the “root” cause of the problem, issue or difficulty. For every effect (symptom) there has to be a cause. It doesn't make sense that one person should have panic attacks or depressed mood and the next person doesn't. What makes them different? Where did it all begin? The analytical process exposes and extinguishes the cause and as a result the symptom is removed.

So what is the cause? With most people is it bottled up emotion. Emotion that has been packed away inside the person for years. Some of it they don't even remember. If you spoke to someone for long enough about when you were a child, it wouldn't take too long before they were describing an event when you got upset; and you have no recollection of it at all.

What Happens in the Sessions

In analytical hypnotherapy you play an active role in the process. In the sessions you get comfy, whereupon I filter in some soothing music and gently induce you into a light relaxing hypnosis. Once relaxed you engage in a process of pure free-association. Don't worry if you don't know what that is yet. I'll explain exactly what you need to do at the beginning of your treatment. If you've ever played the word association game, in which someone says a word and then you say the very first thing that pops into your head - it's a lot like that, only using your memories and experiences instead of words. The process of free-association often leads to a surprising and liberating insight into the unresolved conflicts that lay at the root of your symptoms.

How Does Analytical Hypnotherapy Work?

In certain situations, people's symptoms can be caused by unconscious internal conflicts. An internal conflict is exactly as it sounds. A previous experience, often one from childhood, leaves you feeling troubled and distressed. While it remains unresolved it can fester in the unconscious and cause a whole host of symptomatic experiences. The reason that it is usually a childhood experience is due to the fact that in childhood we haven't yet developed the psychological capacity or understanding to properly process certain things. The combination of free-association under hypnosis enables you to side-step the normal defences that prevent you from fully resolving the issue. In certain situations, the procedure can be carried out without the use of hypnosis, however it may take a little longer.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Analytical hypnotherapy typically requires around 6 - 12 sessions, however many people complete therapy in about 8 sessions. Sessions last one hour and they are spaced at weekly intervals.

Some of the positives of hypnotherapy are:

  • The power to change or replace negative patterns, thoughts, and habits with new positive beliefs and patterns such as addictions
  • Developing a deep sense of calm and relaxation not unlike meditation
  • Helps you to awaken and connect with the greater potentials of your mind
  • Understanding more about your inner programming
  • Opens up a way for new perspectives and awareness
  • Empowers and energises you into new life directions

Debunking the Myths of Hypnotism

Myth #1: The Hypnotist will be able to control my mind.

Fact:No one can control your mind, unless you let them. Your Hypnotherapist will give you suggestions that you want to be given, based on the Pre-Hypnotic Interview. At no point during your session will you lose control of your mind. If you hear a suggestion that you don't agree with, or don't understand, your subconscious mind will automatically reject it.

Myth #2: I will be made to perform embarrassing acts, such as bark like a dog, or walk like a duck.

Fact: This assumption is based on Stage Hypnotism and Hollywood fiction. The truth is, these people volunteer to act on stage, and thy allow themselves to participate in silly suggestions. Hypnotherapy is a serious process of self-improvement, not entertainment.

Myth #3: Hypnosis is "Supernatural".

Fact: Hypnosis is a natural state that has been studied scientifically. Hypnotherapy is based on many years of clinical research by famous Psychologists such as Dr. Sigmund Freud and Dr. Carl Jung, and more recently, by Dr. Milton Erikson and Dr. John Kappas.

Myth #4: If I become Hypnotized, I may not be able to snap out of it.

Fact: Hypnosis is very safe and is in fact, a state of hyper-awareness. Any time there is an emergency, a person would naturally be able to come out of the Hypnotic state by opening their eyes, and stretching or speaking.

Myth #5: I have never been in Hypnosis before.

Fact: Every person naturally enters a state of hypnosis at least twice everyday: just before falling asleep at night, and upon awaking every morning, before getting out of bed. Most people easily enter 'Environmental Hypnosis' while at the movies, watching TV, driving on the highway, or while reading a good book.

Myth #6: Hypnosis is a "Miracle Cure".

Fact: While Hypnosis is a relatively quick method of making permanent improvements, there is no such thing as a one-time "Hypno-Miracle"! Every individual makes progress at his or her own rate.

Myth #7: Hypnosis is a great tool to get someone to "confess".

Fact: Hypnotherapy sessions are kept private and cannot be used for court testimony. It is not an alternative to lie detector tests. Hypnosis cannot force anyone to "tell the truth" or to confess.

Myth #8: When Hypnotized, I will lose all sense of my surroundings, and will have no memory of the session.

Fact: hypnosis is not an unconscious state of sleep. In fact, most people report having a heightened sense of awareness, concentration and focus, and can even hear more acutely during a session.

Myth #9: Self-Hypnosis is safer, better, or more effective than going to a trained professional.

Fact: Self-Hypnosis can be detrimental when not taught by a trained professional, as a negative attitude or belief about oneself will be reinforced regardless of suggestions given. This can cause more stress and problems in the long run. Hypnotherapy directly accesses the subconscious mind, while Self-Hypnosis cannot.

Myth #10: I can't be hypnotized because my mind is too strong/ disciplined.

Fact: This is an archaic belief that has, in recent times, been proven untrue. It was thought, long ago, that only 50% of the population could be hypnotized. Over the last 30 years, Dr. John Kappas developed methods to induce hypnosis in 100% of the population. During your first session, we utilize Dr. Kappas' methods, and will be able to determine what type of suggestibility you have, and hence, how to Hypnotize you. Because it is your decision to use Hypnosis for self-improvement, your mind has already accepted the idea of Hypnotherapy.

Myth #11: If I can be hypnotised easily this means I am weak.

Fact: Being hypnotised relies upon a relaxed state of mind not a strong or weak mind. A relaxed state of mind is about strength of mind not weakness. Allowing a hypnotic process to work with the subconscious takes more strength than weakness, just as re-programing old habits and negative thoughts relies upon a strong mind.

Myth #12: The Hypnotist will swing a watch or pendulum hypnotise me.

Fact: Back to the Stage Hypnotherapists, and we find someone who may use this type of prop, possibly hypnotherapists of days of old as well. These days Hypnotherapists stray from this type of performance (for performance is just what it is.) However, in saying that, in times past when this type of method was used it was used by some as a focus point. These days a trained therapist will use music, sounds of nature or a script to bring you into a state of relaxation.
